The Lark or the Nightingale

This piece is about being outdoors, hearing all the animals and birds, and wind chimes, but especially birds. The title comes from Romeo and Juliet, when she tries to convince Romeo that it is the nightingale, not the lark singing, so he doesn’t have to leave yet. I loved working with the flute and piccolo to imitate bird song that I’ve heard outside, and then balancing it against low sounds. This is one of my longest works, at about 8 minutes, 57 seconds, but its probably my favorite. One of my sisters likes to call it “that tweety bird song”. The same sister, Linda Salem did the gorgeous watercolor on the cover.
